Becoming PHP 5.3 Certified

For the second time in a week I am writing about becoming certified in web goodyness. This time it’s the prestigious Zend PHP 5.3 certification.

Despite only just announcing this, I actually become a certified PHP 5.3 engineer on 29th March 2012. As I wrote about becoming Google Analytics certified earlier in the week, I concluded I should do the same for PHP.

I begun preparing for this exam in 2008, a long story short I never got round to taking the exam. Last year I got the study guides back out and despite having written PHP almost every day for the last 5 years, it was surprising how much I needed to learn.

Zend provide a 150 page PDF guide which was semi useful, but without a doubt the PHP manual is your best resource.

So… what do you need to know to pass the exam?

After learning every function in PHP – Slight exaggeration, although you could be asked about any string or array function. You are required to have an advanced knowledge of SimpleXML & DomDocument, SOAP Clients & SOAP Servers, DateTime, OOP, Design Patterns, Security, Databases, Server Side Caching and more.

How to prepare for the exam?

Zend do provide their own study classes, but unless you have over £1,000 to blow, you’re better off investing in a book and an internet connection (so you can access php.net). If you have a photographic memory then great you don’t need to learn a thing. Otherwise you’re going to need to open your favourite code editor, as experience is essential.

What benefits are there to becoming certified?

Although Zend will tell you, becoming certified will help you land that £100k pay cheque, it probably won’t. It’s a worth while qualification to have, it shows you really do know your stuff when it comes to PHP. Sadly not many employers have heard of the certification and most that have, think it’s a certification in the Zend framework. Once you are certified your name will appear on the Zend Yellow Pages, which is a list of all certified users, you can find me on there. You will also be invited to join a group on LinkedIn just for the elites.
